Milwaukee

October 6th
Right now I’m sitting in some library in Milwaukee. What has been going on lately?

Well on Saturday night I went to day 2 of apocalyptic crust fest. I saw many great bands including PLF, war torn, Resistant Culture, Alehammer, and Hell Bastard. It was a great show, the crowd went nuts for Resistant Culture who are a metal/punk band that incorperate native american themes into their songs.
That night after the show I drove north and north back to Wausau till my gas was getting pretty low. I was about half an hour out of Chicago and I hadn’t seen a gas station forever and the needle was on E. I pulled off into some small town which had a gas station but it was closed(it was 2am). I ended up sleeping in the van across the street in mall parking lot, it was totally deserted and kind of eerie. The next day I filled the tank with just over 24 gallons(25 gallon tank) so I guess I was pretty close to running out…

Next day I drove to Wausau and hung out with Jim and Greg all day. We didn’t do much because they were both nursing the brutal hang overs. On Monday we rode the Wausau skate park, and another cement park that was close by. The cement park was super burly with a big bowl dropping to 8 or 9ft in some sections, really fun though.

Later that day we went to Greg’s for Monday night football(we were in Wisconsin which is Packers territory). They were playing the Minneapolis team, and about 15 people ended up coming over to Gregs to watch the game. Anyways the Packers got stomped, and everyone set to drowning their sorrows.

I don't mind driving.. I think I'd make a good trucker

Today we drove to Milwaukee, its raining again. Should be headed to Chicago for Riot Fest this week.

Yawn..

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois

October 3rd
I’m in Chicago right now for Apocalyptic Crust Fest which is basically a big punk music festival. The last few days have been rad…

We drove into Minneapolis and met up with Kyle, another dude that Jim knows.  We went out for the some beers
And then went riding the next day.

Some beers at a dive bar, good cheap food too

Some beers at a dive bar, good cheap food too

Minneapolis has a bunch of awesome street stuff, and Kyle took us to some great spots(of course I didn’t bring the camera for this).

Kyle told us that he locked up some rails when Mega Tour(this big bmx thing) came to town so that the eastern team couldn’t ride them, apparently it created a bunch of drama when he unlocked the rails for the profile team. (this wont make any sense if you arn’t into bike culture). Anyways, dude was super chill and let us crash at his house for a couple days.

Morning(afternoon?) street ride

Next we drove to see this other guy(Greg) that Jim knows who lives in Wausau Wisconsin. On the way we stopped at a small record distro in Eu Claire called Crimes Against Humanity. We loaded up on tapes for the van($4 each!) and band Tshirts (only $9 a piece).
We rolled into Wausau and rode the skate park there for an hour till Greg got off work. Then we went out for some beers and deep fried cheese curds(delicious).

Doesn't look like much, but it was really fun to ride

After the bar we came back and drank some beers in Greg’s garage.

I don't remember the dude on the left's name, but thats Greg in the middle

Jim decided to stay at Gregs for the weekend, and I would have too if this Festival wasn’t going on. Anyways I drove 5 hours to Chicago through pouring rains and crazy wind, and managed to navigate my way to the venue in the dark.

It was at this venue called the Black Hole, full of filthy train hopper kids and gutter punks. I only caught the last 4 bands, but luckily I managed to see Misery(this old punk band from the late 80s). In between sets I talked briefly with this girl who hitched and hopped freights with some others. She said it was getting too cold for that, they were heading south after this. Sitting on the other side of me is a guy with his hands, arms, neck, and face covered in tattoos. It looks like he’s nodding off, I recall that he collapsed in the mosh pit during the last set and had to be carried off.. Maybe he’s just tired.

After the show I drove around trying to find a big box store to park and sleep at but I could only seem to come across large industrial areas or neighboors full of boarded up buildings(apparently I wasn’t in the best area of Chicago). Eventually I gave up and crashed at a cheap motel. I checked in at 2am, the next day I woke up and destroyed their continental buffet. I think the guy at the desk closed it early because I was cleaning it out.

Now I’m sitting at the parking lot of some college. I thought maybe I could get some internet here, but all the networks are locked so who knows when I’ll get to update this thing. Besides I’ve got some beans and corn to eat.

Nebraska, Iowa

September 30

So Denver was pretty good, hit a few skate parks:

not a bad park

Snake run!

We went to see Auto Lux there, woke up super hungover and ate at some hot dog place. Next day we rode some parks and stayed another night.

Nachos, Beer, and Movies.. another night at Wal-Mart

Nachos, Beer, and Movies.. another night at Wal-Mart

Then we drove do Grand Island and rode this awesome metal skate park that had a perfect box jump and spine.

Next we drove to Omaha. There weren’t any decent parks there so we rode street for a few hours with this skater and bmx dude that we randomly ran into.  We didn’t find much to ride though, mostly because we were getting booted out of spots in less than 5 mins. Clutch was playing there, but I was super exhausted so instead of going to the show we spent our money on a motel room and crashed out. Plus I hadn’t showered for over a week, so I was reaking.

Then we drove to Des Moines, Iowa. The only decent skate park there was an indoor one that was closed that day, so we rode around and found a few decent street spots. Stayed over there and made the drive to Minneapolis the next day.

On the way we hit up this rad park in Mason City, Iowa. The ramps were all wood, and riding it reminded me of the ramps at Thorsby. Awesome park.

Utah, Wyoming

Ok, so lately the trip has been mostly just hitting as many skateparks as possible. We’ve been sleeping in walmarts or other store parking lots every day. This portion of the trip has been kinda grueling, but its worth it to ride so many rad parks. As we move further east I’m sure the cities will have more culture and less western wear stores… Although I do like eating at Waffle House.

On the way up we stayed at some campground that had lots of apple trees. I ate a lot of apples that day.

Then we overnighted in provo and rode a skate park there that was alright(forgot to take a picture of that one)

Analyze why we act this way - in L.A!

So I haven’t posted in a long time. Dan’s been keeping on top of shit by writing a bit every day (in a Word doc, not on the blog obviously), but we’ve been slacking on updating this thing. I spent almost a month in Vancouver due to my wrist bullshit, but it’s healing up pretty good now. I can ride around on the bike with a brace on and I usually wear it when I go to bed, but other than that I don’t need to wear it. I do have a sweet wrist brace tan-line now though.

Due to my extended stay in Vancouver, I skipped all of Washinton and met up with Dan in Portland, it’s ok though because I’d been there a bunch of times since my parents lived in Olympia for a couple years. We stayed there for a couple of days, saw some mediocre bands and went to some cool book stores and stuff like that. Then we went down to Eugene and went to this cool bar called Samurai Duck, they seemed to have metal shows every night and the one we went to was some pretty cool death and grind bands. The next night we tried to make it to a Melvins show, but it apparently started at 7 (literally, and they were the only band on the bill) and we didn’t show up until about 8:30, so it was pretty much over. We met a couple of cool dudes from Redding, California at the skatepark in Eugene.

After Eugene we rolled out to the coast where there was a ton of amazing scenary. We don’t really have many photo’s from the last little while since it seems that Dan emits some kind of EMP bullshit or something, every camera put in his hands breaks within a couple of days, but I think Dan posted some from the Oregon coast. We cruised down the coast into California where we stayed in Crescent City, we drank a bunch at a real shitty bar there and sang karaoke with a couple of old punk rock chicks from Seattle.

From Crescent city we went down the coast a little bit more then went inland to Redding. I tried riding the skatepark there for the first time since busting my wrist and I broke my splint, so it was kind of a weak day. We went to a cool punk bar there called Bubba Thrasher’s that had a bunch of microbrew beers on tap and apparently had lots of punk shows but the one that was supposed to be that night was cancelled. After Redding we cruised down to San Francisco and went to a couple of punk shows, then we met up with my homie Chris from San Jose and rode the Alameda skatepark then some street. Chris runs sjbmx.com/ it’s way better than this site, so check it out. Sometime around this point was my birthday so we went to an Oakland A’s game and rented a motel so that we could shower for the first time in ~10 days. The Yankees slaughtered them, unsurprisingly. After that we cruised down to San Jose, drank a bunch of beer with Chris and crashed on his floor. We rode some skateparks in San Jose the next day, then cruised down to Big Sur to meet up with Ryan (who runs Boicott) and Linda.

After meeting up in Big Sur, we drove around for a couple hours looking for a campground, they were all full so we pulled over on some dead road at the top of a huge ridge. It was actually really legit for a ghetto free camping spot. Ryan and I stayed up drinking till the wee hours of the morning catching up. We got up pretty early the next morning and went hiking a bit and ate an awesome lunch that Ryan and Linda cooked in the van, after that we made the daunting drive to L.A where we hung out with some of Ryans pals for a bit before continuing on down to Costa Mesa.

Costa Mesa was a blast, we stayed there for a week while I worked on the Boicott site (it’s coming soon, I swear) and rode lots of bikes. Ryans crew of friends down there is rad as hell we rode and drank pretty much every night and I had probably one of the best weeks of the trip so far down there.  We rode a pool on top of a mountain, toured the S & M bikes machine shop (regarded by many as the very best company in BMX), rode some good street and drank at lots of cool bars.

For our final night hanging with Ryan we went to the Bicycle film fest in L.A for their BMX night. I Love My Bicycle is a documentary about FBM bikes which is one of my favourite bike companies (I have an FBM frame at the time of writing this) and it was better than I could expect it was the feature of the night, but the 2 shorts that preceded it were pretty good too, one was about a train trip that Joe Rich and Ruben Alacantera took.

After L.A we started making our way to Burning Man…

I hope that load of shit that I call a post made since, if it didn’t just read Dans posts exclusively. To do that click here, if for some bizarre reason you want to follow my posts specifically, click here.

Las Vegas

Sept. 12
Monday we checked out of our motel and did some laundry. We also started cleaning all the dust off the inside of the van. Fran helped with the cleaning and remarked that she enjoys cleaning? Oh ya, Fran is doing a round the world trip, her first stop was burning man, I think she said she was heading to New Zealand in a few weeks. Anyways after that we continued to Vegas.

In vegas we stayed at the Sahara, because it was super cheap ($50 each for 4 nights). The next day we met up with Loyd, one  of my drinking buddies from Fort Mac. At this point Loyd had spent all his money, but he was still cruising around on some rascal scooter thing that he had rented. Also met up with my old roommate Topgun(Chris) and his girlfriend Lisa.

I checked out Dream Car Rentals, and I honestly would have shelled out the $900 to rent a Lamborghini for 5 hours, but they said that to rent any Lambo or Ferrari you need to be 26. Weak.
First two days were the usual drinking and gambling. On the third day we hit the gun range, I shot a 12 gauge, an MP-5 and a fully auto AK-47. Letting the AK rip was a blast. After that we hit up a lobster special at the Tropicana, then went out for the night.

The last day we lounged at the pool with Fran for a few hours before saying goodbye(she was headed to LA to stay with some comedian), then later on I met up with Topgun and Lisa for some drinks at the Excalibur. Then we went to Tournament of Kings which is like this medieval joust thing where you get a whole chicken to eat with no utensils. We were sat next to a group of girls who said they were here for belly dancing lessons…
After that we went to the Double Down Saloon, which is the punk bar of Vegas(its tag line is “the anti-Vegas”) It was a rad bar with Black Flag on the juke box, bacon flavoured martinis, and an old hells angel as the door man.
4 days of vegas was enough, even though there were still some things I wanted to check out: indoor sky diving, the Bodies exhibit, etc. But it was hot as hell outside, the heat was brutal. We decided to start driving to the Grand Canyon, then head north, maybe to SLC.

On the way we passed Hoover dam, seeing it in person was nuts, that thing is gigantic.

Burning Man

Burning man was gnarly, its hard to describe because its so many different things at once. Me and Jim both checked out different stuff, so he has another set of good stories. I’ll just try to summarize my experience there in a PG-13 way:
Tuesday:
-picked up tickets
-drove around deciding who we want to camp with
-settle next to a lady from Cali
-night is spent wandering around the playa, everyone is wearing crazy clothes or no clothes
-not quite sure what to think at this point

Early camp set up that blew down

Early camp set up that blew down

Wednesday
-Duke Champaign La Money moves in next to us
-we combine our camps and raise a large shade structure
-hang out all day drinking beers
-night is spent wandering around the playa
-checked out a booth that promised a scoop of any flavor you could think of
-went to a bunch of bars, raves and art cars(pretty much big rolling parties)

Thursday
-Find a punk rock camp thats blaring good tunes
-some dude is on the PA insulting everyone who walks by and doesn’t enter the camp for a drink, its hilarious.
-they have a half pipe here!
-ride the half pipe all afternoon till I pop my tire
-night is spent at the punk bar and other bars

The punk bar, check the band set up on the roof

The punk bar, check the band set up on the roof

Friday
-wander around the playa during the day, dust storms are starting to roll in a bit
-hang around center camp, lots of weird hippy stuff like drum circles and body painting is going on
-chill at the jazz café for a bit
-night is crazy! The playa is absolutely bumping tonight
-go to center camp for this weird percussionist/marching band competition
-the bands are whipping the place into a frenzy, starting with just a simple beat and building till we are all dancing and going nuts. Such a good time.

Photo of the man that I obviously didn't take

Photo of the man that I obviously didn't take

Saturday
-crazy dust storms all day, at this point the inside of the van is covered in dust
-hang out all day with the neighbours(champagne and Sherry) and other randoms
-meet up with a cool British chick who’s looking for a ride to Las Vegas
-try to take a quick nap but end up sleeping till midnight
-rush out to the playa to realize I’ve missed the burning of the man(doh!)
-party all night
-dust storms are relentless all night and day, sometimes you can only see 10 or 15 feet in front of you

Sunday
-wake up with the worst hangover I have ever had.
-dust storms are still going like crazy
-lots of people are leaving
-contemplate staying for the temple burn
-decide to leave, because the dust storms just aren’t ending
-say goodbye sherry and our other neighboors
-pick up british girl(Fran) and begin leaving
-its takes 2 hours to get onto the highway, crazy traffic
-drive to Hawthorne(half way to Vegas) and crash in a motel (first shower in 7 days)

Burning man was totally rad, and I’m going back next year for sure! 40, 000 people showed up this year, I can only see it getting bigger. There’s so many strange and absurd things there, all set up in the middle of the desert. Everything that is brought in must be packed out, and the playa must be left totally clean after the event, which is why its so amazing that people put in so much effort to create enormous art pieces and giant bars/clubs for an event that only lasts a week. Inspiring.

This Neil Girling dude took a bunch of amazing photos of this event, check them out here:
