LA and Coasta Mesa

August 28…?
The last week has been great

Once again, there’s hardly any pictures cause our camera sucks, and the picture that were taken are not the greatest because the camera has no screen or viewfinder.
Sunday Ryan took us to check out sheep hills, which is  a set of trails that use to be good, but they were pretty much unrideable because the summer heat was causing them to crumble. After that we went down to Newport beach and drank some beers before going to a beach bar. The bar was packed but we managed to grab a table with a couple girls. After that we headed over to the pier and out-skidded some fixed gear kids.

Monday I woke up with a killer hang over and spent the day hanging around the beach. Later that day we rode UCI which is this big university that has a ton of ledges and rails that can be ridden. It was such a great spot, almost nothing was capped and the ledges were all waxed and super smooth.

Tuesday I hung around at the beach most of the day while Jim worked on the Boycott website. Later on I went to Detroit bar, and it was pretty lame. Oh ya, I think on this day me and Sawyers(another dude who rides bikes) went and rode this awesome drainage ditch that had a killer wall ride and banks galore.

Wednesday we Chilled at this Jaren dudes house, which was like a warehouse/store front type of space that was covered in graphitti and art on the inside where he fixes up cars. Met some new people there, then we all biked over to the Converse Shoe company offices and  rode their ramp set up outside. After that we headed to a couple bars for some beers.

Thursday this dude John gave us a tour of the S and M bike factory. It pretty much looked like your average machine shop, except there were bike frames, bars and metal tubes staked everywhere. They had a small ramp/bowl in the back room of the shop too, but it was full of stuff so we couldn’t ride it. After that John and Sawyers hopped in the van and we took off to find this pool on the edge of the city. Hiking to the pool took about 40 mins, all up hill on this sketchy gravel/sand rode(riding back down was a trip).

Hangin' at the pool, terrible picture

Bikes!

Bikes!

Anyways we hung around there till nightfall and had a great sesh. Then we made our way back down the steep, sketchy gravel rode in pitch black darkness (most of our bikes don’t have brakes either). After that we headed to a biker bar and filled up on greasy food. The group split, with Jim and Ryan going back to do some work, and me John and Sawyers took off with a few others to try and get some riding done at Red Park before they shut off the lights. Anyways we only got to ride for 20 mins, then we all headed back to Ryan’s.

Friday we all(Me, Jim, Ryan and Lynda) went to the beach at night and drank beers while watching the waves roll in. Then we went to a bar, played darts, and some dude was talking smack on Canada so I set him straight. At this point we were all loaded, so we stumbled to an arcade, and grabbed some more beers before heading home.

Saturday began with a brutal hangover, I didn’t even make it to the beach this day. Later on we met up with a bunch of bike riders and drove into LA for the bike film fest. First we watched a film by Ruben and Joe Rich(two bmx pros), then we viewed a documentary that some guy had done on FBM bikes (an east coast bmx company that’s been around for years). Both films were pretty rad. After that we picked up some beer and headed to a curved wall ride.

The wall ride was amazing, a full 180 degree curved wall that you had to pedal super fast at.  I managed to get about 2/3 of the way around, but I never could ride the whole wall. Next we all rode over to a bar that was having an after party for the film fest. The bar was alright, but across the street we saw a ton of people partying on a roof top of someones house. We took our beer and headed over there… at this point things get blurry but eventually we all crashed at this Mark dudes house(another bmx dude).
Sunday we said goodbye to Ryan and Lynda and all the LA/Coasta Mesa people and began our drive to Burning Man, which is in northern Nevada(north east of Reno). We stayed overnight in Yosemite National park, which is about halfway through Cali.

Monday we drove to Reno which took way longer than expected because forest fires were shutting down multiple highways. Overnighted in Reno, parked in a walmart parking lot. Tuesday we bought supplies for burning man: big water containers, goggles, dust masks, garbage bags, waste water pail, filled up on gas and propane. Lastly we hit the liquor store, I love how cheap beer is down here!

After that it was time to drive the last 100 miles out into the desert…

Too much to write about

Lets go back to…

August 9 2009

I checked out of the state park in the morning and started driving up Mount St. Helens. The road had some great views on the way up:
img_0559-800x600
Halfway up the van was getting pretty hot, and I had to pull of for a bit.

Next day I drove down to salem to check out the trails there. The jumps were huge and I could only clear the first double, He’s some pictures:

Next day I met up with Jim in Portland. I can’t remember what we did there, probably went to a punk show or something. Anyways the next day, drove down highway 101 to Eugene and checked out a metal show there that was being put on by one of the chicks from that band Kittie. Oh ya, Jim’s camera broke at this point so theres no pictures really. I bought another one but it only took me 2 days to break that one too. Technology is a rip off.

Over the next few days we drove down the coast and checked out the redwood forest, and camped around that area on the coast.

Went to a bar in some coastal city that was totally dead, except for these two aging punk girls. They turned out to be cool. Much beer was drank and karaoke sung.

In Eugene there was a couple people riding the skate park that were from Redding, CA. So we decided to go check out their skate park. It was pretty cool, no pics of it of course.

Spent a day or 2 in Redding, then down to San Fransisco where we met up with a dude Jim knows, he showed us a good skate park and we rode some famous street spots downtown. Ripping through the downtown traffic is super fun. The skate park we went to was right next to the abandoned naval base that the myth busters do a lot of their filming on, too bad they weren’t there.

We went to a show to see the Capitalist Casualties play, but they had cancelled. Anyways a bunch of other rad bands were playing, I don’t remember their names at the moment. I’d look them up but this bastard at the coffee shop just cut off my wireless.

Yesterday we check out an Oakland A`s game. They were playing New York and got crushed 7 to 2 or something like that. Still cool to check out though, we had good seats and the beer was flowing. Today we mainly just hung around downtown and checked out the stores, lots of amazing record stores (I can`t buy records now, so I waste money on Tapes for the van.) and a cool Anarchist book store. This is only a small portion of all the stuff that’s been going on in the last while. Its hard to keep updating the site because anytime we get internet the first thing I do is check out the punk shows, bars, skate parks, and walmarts to park at. After that my computer is usually dead and the deep cycle battery in the van in knackered, so its tough to charge it. Maybe now that I brought this semi-up to date I can keep updating it instead of putting it off.

August 23

Stayed 2 nights in San Jose. The first night we went out to the bars with this dude called Chris that Jim knows. The booze was flowing and the next morning we got up around 11am(Chris was supposed to wake us up at 10 before he went to work.) Anyways, as we emerged from the basement Chris’s mom was standing there staring at us(I guess he never told his parents two hung over Canadians were sleeping in the basement. ha).

San Jose had some good skate parks, and the weather was terrific.

Then we drove to Big Sur, which is on the coast, an hour south of San Jose. We met Ryan, a friend of Jim’s from Calgary and his girlfriend Lynda, and we all guerrilla camped on the side of a big mountain ridge, because all the campgrounds were full.

Then we all drove back to LA yesterday and went to a party at a bike shop, then hit a burrito stand and went to another house party. Looks like we’ll be in LA until Friday while Jim does work on Ryan’s companies website. Ryan has a clothing company called Boycott, he makes shirts, hats, patches, and puts on BMX jams. Maybe Jim will post a link to the website when he’s done building it.

To the coast

On my way to the coast I drove through the foot hills and the road seemed to be going up and up. It was still hot as hell outside and the van overheated on the way up a long hill. I stopped for 20 mins to let her cool down and take in the scenery.

Finally I got to the coast and headed north on highway 101 to Astoria, a coastal city. Astoira has this crazy bridge that goes across a large span of water. I don’t know how high up it was, but driving across it was pretty cool.

After I crossed I made my way to long beach. On this side of the mountains the weather was a lot more cloudy, and it wasn’t much of a beach day…

After that I drove back to Astoria and camped out.

The next day I bummed around Astoria, got some free wifi at Safeway and traded in some of my books for new ones at the used book store. I walked along the waterfront and heard a bunch of moanin and groanin.
It turned out to be a bunch of sea lions(or otters? or seals?) sitting on this dock. They were hilarious, one would jump onto the dock and knock another one off, then they would start howlin at each other, then a minute later they’re sleeping again.

After hanging around for a bit I decided to head in the direction of Mount St. Helens. Driving over there took longer than expected, so I stayed overnight in a state park.

Washington and Oregon

August 5 2009

Well about a week ago is when I decided to head down to the states on my own. The first night I drove to Langley BC where they had a great skate park. Too bad it was full of kids and teenagers who were sitting all over the ramps. The park had a great mini/spine section that was all concrete and really smooth.

That night I parked the van in a Wal-Mart parking lot, and when I woke up the next morning it was hot as hell in the van. This was the start of a heat wave that lead me to staying in hostels, because the van would stay roasting hot till 12 at night and start heating up as soon as the sun hit it in the morning.

The next day I crossed the border. Barely. I thought I was prepared to cross, but they asked me all kinds of questions, mainly after they found out I didn’t have  a job to return to. Its hard to explain that your on a leave of absence from a career placement organization. Anyways after a young lady interrogated me for a while, to the point where I was sure that I wasn’t gonna get across, she sent me to her supervisor who asked a few more questions and finally sent me on my way.

That day I drove down to Arlington cause they have a crazy skate park:
img_0504-800x600
Unfortunately it was hot as hell outside and after an hour of riding I was soaked. And I still hadn’t figured out a good line around that bowl.
So I drove over to a campsite by a river and stayed there the night.

Not the best Campsite, but it worked

Not the best Campsite, but it worked

My spot was right next to the river

The next day I drove down to Seattle where I had booked in at the Green Tortoise hostel. I left the van on the side of the road with the bikes locked inside in a suburb in north Seattle, because parking downtown was $21 to $28 a day. I took the bus into the city.
img_0511-800x600
That night I went out to the Fun House, which is seattle’s punk bar. Anyways it was a Wednesday night and it was dead in there, even though there were bands. This band called Pink Pussy Death Machine played first, it was these two women who looked to be in their 30s, and they rocked the place(me and 4 other people). Next was a band called Quick Brown Fox, they weren’t bad, and they gave me a demo for free, which was cool. Some other band played after them too, but they were forgettable.

One thing about Seattle is there’s lots of homeless people, and they have no shame in beggin’. When I was walking to the bar this one guy came up beside me and grabbed my arm and he said: “I need money man! My parents are dead! I have no job! I have no house! I need money!”  I told him I haven’t got no American money on me(which was the truth). Then he said, more desperate than ever “come on man, how bout some of that Canadian money? Twenty bucks! Twenty bucks Canadian and I’ll leave you alone!” (this whole time he had been hangin onto my arm while I was walking). “nah” I said. He followed me for another block pleading his case then he grabbed onto someone else’s arm. The guy didn’t even look poor, he had nice shoes and it looked like his hair had been cut recently.

I don’t mind giving a buck or two to people who busking or flying signs, but don’t try to force me to give you money.

Next day I walked around and checked out Seattle. I walked through the fish market, which was crazy busy, then down the waterfront to Olympic Sculpture park. There were lots of weird things made out of metal that were baking in the hot sun:

These giant steel wavy things were neat

These giant steel wavy things were neat

Metal Tree!

Metal Tree!

After that I walked over to The Experience Music Project, which is like a music museum mainly focused on the northwest music scene(jazz, punk, rap, rock, and grunge). The main focal point is a huge instrument sculpture (made up of over 700 instruments). Some of the instruments were connected to little devices that could play them, and if you put on headphones you could listen to the song the sculpture was playing.

I stared at thing for at least half an hour

I stared at thing for at least half an hour

Also featured at the museum was an extensive Jimmy Hendrix exhibit, featuring his old clothes, guitars, and his handwritten song lyrics(where you could see lines that he crossed out or added to famous songs. That was interesting.).

After that I went back to the hostel to get out of the heat for a few hours and to eat the free dinner they were serving that night(did I mention they also serve free breakfast there?). Then a large group of us all went out on a pub crawl to a bunch of different bars(some bars were selling $1 pints of PBR!). I met a bunch of cool people, and our table at the bar looked like a UN meeting.

I left Seattle on Friday to drive to Portland so I could check out Portland Punk Fest, featuring a ton of killer bands. I checked out all the hostels in Portland but they were all full so I ended up staying at a cheap motel. At this point it was still to hot to be sleeping in the van.

It was a good show, here’s some pictures (the pictures suck because I usually just pull the camera out as an excuse to get to the front of the crowd).

Vancouver Island

We decided to leave the van in Vancouver and take the ferry to Vancouver Island for a few days. Stayed at a hostel over there for a few nights which was alright, but it didn’t have much atmosphere. The days over there were easy, we’d get up walk around the habour and check out the city, and touristy stuff. Then later on sit down by the water and drink beers before hitting a brew pub or bar.

After a few days in victoria I decided I wanted to bungee jump in Nanaimo, and since I knew it would be expensive I figured we could offset the cost a bit by hitchhiking up there. I’ve never hitched anywhere before, so this seemed like it would be a good adventure. We got the city bus all the way to the edge of town and then stood at the side of an on-ramp.

No cars stopped for a while so we moved down the highway a few hunded feet to where all the lanes merged into one. This proved to be a bad Idea cause as soon as we left our old spot two other guys walked out there and got picked up in about 2 minutes.

So we walked back up the on ramp and about 10 mins later a guy picked us up and gave us a ride all the way to Nanaimo. We talked the whole way about becoming a “free man on the land” he was super knowledgeable on the subject. He gave me his website and email but I musta lost it, if I can find it I’ll put it up, cause the guy did some killer graffiti.

Anyways we rolled into Nanaimo and found the hostel we booked(after going to the wrong one). This hostel was really nice, everything was brand new, it was called the Painted Turtle. Naniamo wasn’t bad, walked around the city, they were having a  bathtub race the day after were suppose to leave.

Biggest bathtub I ever saw

Biggest bathtub I ever saw

There was live music in the park so we hung out there for a bit, but the place was crawling with pigs so I couldn’t drink my beer.

Next day we caught a shuttle bus to “Wild Parks”, the bungee place. I got registered and paid(and forgot my $10 coupon cause I was too excited), and Jim bitched out cause he didn’t want to get his cast wet or something. He took a video of me jumping but I’m not sure how to upload that just yet.

After that we caught the shuttle back into town and headed over to the ferry after gorging at Wendys. We took the ferry back to north Vancouver. And made our way back to Matt and Rachel’s place.

A night or two later in Vancouver we all went out to a dance/hipster bar/club kinda thing and we got our dance on. I don’t know how to dance, but I know how to drink, so I stuck with what I was good at and ended up getting bombed… along with everyone else.

Been a while

This update takes us back a few weeks, between arriving in Vancouver and Jim’s hand breakage. Around this time there wasn’t a lot of picture takin’ goin on, so You’ll just have to use your imagination…
July 19

Been in Vancouver for a week now, there is always something on the go here.

Sunday we went to a small farmers market with lots of organic stuff. Then we went to Commercial, aka “car-free day” which happens every Sunday. They close a couple blocks in the city and there’s all sorts of vendors, street shows, and weird hippy stuff.

Monday we rode Kirkstone park, it had a nice spine and lots of decent rails to jib.

Tuesday we rode Bonsar and New west minster park. Bonsar was crazy, it had a 16ft full pipe and a huge street section. New west minster looked like it had been built in the 80s. It was almost all banks and hips and stuff. I keep forgetting the camera, so there’s no picture of these parks.

Wednesday we checked out a show at the Cobalt, which is a total dive. The Cobalt is vancouvers punk/metal bar. I met some cool people there and this Sam dude invited us to a basement show at his house the next day.

The basement show was great, I don’t remember what and of the bands were called but we met some rad people. A few nights later there was another show in an old theater that we checked out. It was Mudlark headling, but one of the opening bands really took the show with a five minute long set that sounded like Charles Bronson covers. I think they were called war command or something.

After the show all the punks were heading down to the water for a campfire and beers, so we checked that out for a bit.

Around about this time Jim broke his hand so we decided to check out the Island for a few days.

Left the van on the mainland and took the ferry to Victoria on Tuesday. Saw some killer whales on the way over. Booked into a hostel for a few days. Took a tour of the harbor and sampled a few different brew pubs. I can’t figure out how to upload photos on these ancient hostel computers, so I’ll do a better update in a few days. Might hitch to Naniamo tommorow for bungy jumping!

2 dudes 1 vancouver

We’ve been in Vancouver just over a week now and I am in love with this city.

We are staying with my good pal’s Matt and Rachel. They have lived out here for about 5 months and knew enough to show us around the city, plus Matt rides BMX so he showed us a bunch of skateparks and some trails.

Matt and Rachel (we ate some of the best chinese food I’ve ever had, and it was vegan except for a couple items):

Matt and Rachel

We’ve been going to lots of rad punk shows and the scene here seems so tight, we met a bunch of super welcoming people and have been hitting shows and partying with them a little bit. Besides that we’ve been riding a ton of BMX.I even rode trails for the first time which was amazing. I took a bad fall riding some shit I shouldn’t have been since it was super dark and my eyes suck. I’ll be out of commission for at least a month due to a fracture in my hand and the cast/splint thing that I have to wear.

Fractured some bone in my hand or wrist or something like that.

Fractured some bone in my hand or wrist or something like that.

An unexpected and awesome surprise was that my friend Danny Cox took a break from his adventures to come visit Matt while we were here. Danny was part way through a ~2500 mile hike on the Pacific Crest Trail and decided he wanted a break. Danny and his brother rode their bikes from Victoria to Tijuana year and Danny has also spent a lot of time hitch hiking around the continent. His adventures trump ours by a longshot but have also been a big inspiration for me wanting to travel. You can read about his current adventure at his blog.

Danny eats more than any other person I’ve ever met.

Danny doing what he does best.

Danny doing what he does best.

We are still here for a while and since I won’t be riding, I’ll try to take more photos and maybe put some more thought into my posts so they aren’t boring.

Update finally

Here’s some writing from the journal I’ve sort of been keeping. Can’t always post here, because sometimes internet is hard to find.

Sunday was more chill as people nursed hangovers and Marie’s parents fed us again(thanks!).

Here’s Marie:

van-trip-bc-027-copy

And tour manager Duncan:

van-trip-bc-011-copy

We headed to a picturesque water fall and watched Shawn try to climb into a cave. He fell shortly after this photo was taken and somehow escaped getting hurt.

shaun-waterfall

Next we relaxed at the Sushwap lake for a few hours before heading to enderby to hit up the skate park. It was super hot out, and riding was too much, so we went back to the Sushwap for a few hours to swim and cook food.

July 9th 2009

Monday we finally got an oil change on the van, then went to a café with internet in salmon arm. We hung around town for a bit until the bands played a show at the Hideaway. Once again the bands played a killer set and left the crowd yelling for more.

Here’s Deadhorse:

van-trip-bc-064-copy

Psychic Alliance:

van-trip-bc-070-copy

That night we headed over to skimkin lake and found an awesome place to camp, but the rain rolled in and ruined the fire.

Tuesday it was still pouring out so we left the campsite and dropped Conner off in salmon arm to meet the bands. We drove on to Merit, because it was the closest place around that didn’t have rain forecasted. We met up with Mullet and Mark, two dudes who used to live in Fort Mac.

Mark let us crash at his place where he lives with his gf Amanda and her mom. We all got bombed playing drinking games.

van-trip-bc-115-copy

Here’s Mark lookin’ fresh:

van-trip-bc-122-copy

After not showering for 6 days I was smelling like a dirty hobo, showering there was great. On the way out Amanda’s mom gave us home made jam, peaches and a can of her award winning salsa. That salsa was the best shit I have every tasted, I have been putting it on everything.

Wednesday we rode the merit park and trails.

van-trip-bc-124-copy

The trails were rad, the big set is towards the right side of this photo:

Then we headed out to a free campsite on a river called N’koya (or something). Campsite is super chill, probably stay another day then move on.

van-trip-bc-127-copy

van-trip-bc-140-copy

Not sure if were gonna head to van next or what.

July 11

Thursday we drove from Merit to Hope and stayed at an RV park. The place was a rip, we bought a $7 bag of fire wood and it was soaking wet, couldn’t even get a fire going. Our spot was right on a river though, so that was pretty cool.

van-trip-bc-144-copy

Hope had an interesting skate park, it must have been built in the 90s. The concrete was like sandpaper and all the transitions were steep.

I should really take some shots of us actually riding these parks…

Saturday we drove to Vancouver.

Last Week

Trip started Saturday, headed out from Calgary with 2 bands in three vans.

dead-horse-psychic-pre-trip

Hit a stamped breakfast in the morning and then hit the road with Dead Horse and Psychic Alliance. The mountains were tough on the vans, and 3 hours in Dead Horse’s van was on the side of the road with a blown rad.

broken-van

They got towed an we ended up cramming all their gear and people into our van and making the rest of the trip to Enderby.

That night the bands played the cliff café, they slayed the place and the locals were pumped.

Then we headed to Marie’s house to sleep for the night, and her awesome parents made us a ton of food.
